It was beginning to get fairly popular around when MoP/Warlords of Draenor were out and a lot of WoW players were becoming unhappy with retail. The private server scene was growing at a slow roll from 2012-2015.
They also made mostly good decisions when it came to dealing with drama, exploits, player behavior, etc. It had an incredibly passionate staff who worked tirelessly to make the server fun & did an amazing job with anti-cheat and banning bots. The impact Discord had on the way Classic was played was totally insane. There was a super active forum that mirrored the old Blizzard forums back in the day. It had a fantastic community that developed WITHOUT DISCORD. The other servers were all pretty mediocre, but Nost had 3 things: Nostalrius in particular is the only server I’d say was straight up better than Classic. I also never heard of a single person talk about buying gold on private servers, while on Classic almost everyone I know bought gold at some point. Stuff like Rank 14, Thunderfury, & Scarab Lord were more rare & difficult to obtain on private servers compared to Classic with the PvP pool size boosting & server-wide Discords cranking out 10x r14 in a week or the something like 57 Scarab Lords my server had on Classic.
There were definitely tryhards and min/max culture on private servers, but Classic was like industrial tryharding.
But with Classic the game also somehow felt more superficial than private servers The Blizzard Classic experience was, gameplay wise, inarguably a step up in quality from private servers.
